Roshan cannot speak, cannot walk, and cannot protect himself in any meaningful way. He communicates through crying, gurgling, the occasional tooth-filled grin at wildly inappropriate moments, and an unerring instinct for attaching himself to whoever needs him most. He is the MacGuffin who becomes the heart. As a storytelling presence, Roshan represents innocence and possibility. His survival is the stated objective of the journey, but his real function is to force connection between creatures who would otherwise have none. He responds to warmth regardless of species and is genuinely unafraid of the things that should terrify him, which unnerves predators and touches everyone else.
Roshan is a small, round-faced human baby with dark eyes and wisps of dark hair. He is wrapped in animal-skin swaddling and wears a small necklace of carved bone. He has the ineffable physical presence of all infants: impossible vulnerability wrapped in intermittent, bewildering contentment.
