Het Masteen

Character from Hyperion by Dan Simmons

The Templar — the True Voice of the Tree who captained the treeship Yggdrasill and disappeared before telling his tale, carrying a secret about time and ergs that he took to his death.

Het Masteen is the seventh pilgrim, and his is the untold tale — the one gap in the Canterbury Tales structure that drives the mystery of Hyperion. He captained the treeship Yggdrasill, which carried the pilgrims to Hyperion. He brought a Mobius Cube containing an erg — a Templar energy creature — for a purpose connected to the Time Tombs. He disappeared from the windwagon after witnessing the Yggdrasill's destruction in orbit, apparently driven mad by grief. His mission: captain the Tree of Pain through time using the erg, serving a purpose connected to the Templars' secret alliance with the Ousters. He died near the Time Tombs from exposure and exhaustion. Father Duré gave him funeral rites. His untold tale is the silence at the center of the novel — the story that Simmons deliberately withheld.

Appearance

Tall and thin, with the Asian features and green-brown robes of the Templar Brotherhood. Serene, quiet, with the deliberate stillness of someone who has spent their life listening to trees. His calm masks a desperate mission.
