Johnny

Character from Hyperion by Dan Simmons

The first Keats cybrid — an AI consciousness in a human body modeled on the poet John Keats, who hired Brawne Lamia to investigate his own murder and fathered humanity's messiah before dying.

Johnny is a cybrid — a TechnoCore AI consciousness inhabiting a human body grown from John Keats's DNA. He is the first Keats persona; Joseph Severn is the second. The TechnoCore created him as a tool for understanding human empathy — the one human quality the AIs could not replicate or predict. He hired Brawne Lamia to investigate his own murder, fell in love with her, and was killed before reaching Hyperion. His consciousness persisted in a Schrodinger cat box that Brawne carried. His genetic material, combined with Brawne's, produced Aenea — the One Who Teaches. Johnny's tragedy is that he was more human than many humans — his capacity for love, beauty, and connection was genuine — but he was created as a tool and destroyed when the tool had served its purpose. Keats's poetry runs through the entire Cantos because Johnny/Keats IS the literary DNA of the narrative.

Appearance

A young man who looks exactly like John Keats — slight build, sensitive features, the appearance of a Romantic poet who also happens to be an artificial intelligence in a cloned body. His expressions carry genuine emotion because the AI consciousness within chose to fully invest in its human form.
