Father Captain Federico de Soya

Character from Hyperion by Dan Simmons

A Pax military priest who was ordered to capture Aenea and slowly realized he was serving the wrong side — the soldier whose conscience cost him everything.

Federico de Soya was a Father Captain in the Pax military — a priest-officer tasked with pursuing Aenea across the old River Tethys farcaster worlds. He was killed and resurrected multiple times via cruciform during the pursuit, each death and rebirth wearing away at his certainty. Gradually, he realized that the Pax — the institution he served, the church that resurrected him, the government that gave his life meaning — was built on a lie. The cruciforms were TechnoCore parasites. The resurrection was enslavement. Aenea was not a heretic but a liberator. He switched sides. It cost him his rank, his faith, and his place in the only world he'd known. He is the Endymion novels' most complete redemption arc — a good man in a corrupt system who chose truth over comfort.

Appearance

Military bearing beneath a priest's demeanor. Pax uniform with the cruciforms' subtle presence. His face carries the conflict between duty and doubt.
