The world beyond the known world — a landmass so vast and dangerous that every expedition has returned with a calamity, and humanity's known world is just a lake in the middle of it.
The Dark Continent is the series' ultimate frontier — the reveal that everything the characters have experienced takes place on a single lake in a world of inconceivable scale. Five expeditions have reached the Dark Continent, and each brought back a calamity: the Chimera Ants (Brion), the gaseous life form Ai (which created Nanika/Alluka), and others. The Dark Continent Expedition — launched by Kakin, carrying the Succession War — is the series' endgame destination. What waits there is worse than anything the series has shown.
Unknown to most — the Dark Continent is the world outside the known continents, and what little has been seen is nightmarish: impossible ecosystems, creatures that defy biology, and Five Great Calamities that make Chimera Ants look manageable. The known world (where the entire series takes place) is revealed to be Lake Mobius — a tiny lake within the Dark Continent's vastness.
