The Scarlet Eyes are the reason the Kurta Clan was massacred. The Phantom Troupe killed the entire clan and harvested their eyes because, when the Kurta experience strong emotion, their eyes turn scarlet — a color so striking that the eyes became the most valuable collectible in the world's underground market. Kurapika's quest to recover all pairs drives his character arc. Each pair he recovers is a funeral he couldn't attend. Tserriednich, the Fourth Prince, possesses several pairs, making him Kurapika's primary target during the Succession War.
