Poor Man's Rose

Item from Hunter x Hunter by Yoshihiro Togashi

A miniature nuclear bomb designed to be so cheap that any country can afford one — the weapon Netero carried in his chest, proof that humanity's most terrifying weapon isn't Nen but mass production.

The Poor Man's Rose is the series' most thematically important weapon. It's a low-cost weapon of mass destruction designed to be proliferated — so cheap that developing nations can stockpile them. Netero carried one implanted in his chest as the final contingency against Meruem. The bomb didn't kill Meruem — the poison did. The Rose's true weapon isn't the explosion but the toxin it releases, which is fatal even to beings that survive the blast. Meruem, the most powerful biological entity in the series, was killed by a cheap human weapon that any country could manufacture. Netero's final words — 'You know nothing of humanity's bottomless malice' — frame the Rose as humanity's real power: not Nen, not martial arts, but the willingness to build weapons of indiscriminate destruction and use them.

Appearance

A small bomb with a distinctive rose-shaped explosion pattern. The detonation creates a beautiful, flower-like blast — the 'rose' — followed by a poison cloud that is more lethal than the explosion itself. Aesthetically pretty. Functionally apocalyptic.
