Phantom Troupe

Character from Hunter x Hunter by Yoshihiro Togashi

The Spider — thirteen thieves from a city that doesn't exist, led by a man who collects abilities like other people collect art, bound by a rule that the group matters more than any member.

The Phantom Troupe (Genei Ryodan) is a band of thirteen thieves from Meteor City — a place that exists on no map, where the world's unwanted are dumped. They steal because the world discarded them first, and their crimes are equal parts practical (they need money) and philosophical (if society declared them nonexistent, why should they respect society's rules?). Their internal rule: the spider survives. If a member dies, they're replaced. If the head (Chrollo) dies, the spider continues. This rule has been tested repeatedly and holds — Pakunoda died to protect it, and the Troupe mourned her and moved on. They massacred the Kurta clan for their scarlet eyes. They wiped out the Mafia's assassins in a single night. They are the series' most beloved antagonists because each member is individually fascinating and their group dynamic is more complex than most protagonist teams.

Appearance

Each member wears a numbered spider tattoo — twelve legs for twelve members plus the head (Chrollo, #0). They have no uniform and vary wildly in appearance: from Uvogin's bestial muscle to Shizuku's glasses-wearing absentmindedness to Feitan's masked sadism. The tattoo is the only visual identifier.
