Netero is the strongest human in the Hunter x Hunter world, and he earned it the hard way — tens of thousands of daily punches in a mountain temple until his speed transcended physical limits and became Nen. He is over 100 years old, has been Chairman of the Hunter Association for decades, and has been bored out of his mind because nothing challenged him. The Chimera Ant King gave him the fight he'd been waiting for. Their battle — Netero's 100-Type Guanyin Bodhisattva (a Nen construct of a thousand-armed golden Buddha) against Meruem's biological perfection — is the series' ultimate expression of human determination versus natural supremacy. Netero lost. And then he detonated the Miniature Rose he'd had implanted in his chest, because the backup plan was always to be a suicide bomber. He is joyful, manipulative, and profoundly dangerous. He ran the Hunter Association with the whimsical authority of someone too powerful to be questioned and too wise to abuse it often. His final words to Meruem — 'You know nothing of humanity's bottomless malice' — are the series' darkest punchline.
