Meruem

Character from Hunter x Hunter by Yoshihiro Togashi

The King of the Chimera Ants — born to devour humanity and rule the world, undone by a blind girl playing a board game, because power without purpose is just noise.

Meruem is the series' masterpiece. Born as the Chimera Ant Queen's ultimate creation, he emerged fully formed, killed his own mother, and declared himself king of the world — all within minutes. His early characterization is pure menace: he kills without thought, views humans as food, and considers all life subordinate to his own. Then he meets Komugi — a blind, sickly girl who is the world champion of Gungi (a board game). She beats him. He can't beat her. And in the space between games, something changes. He begins to see her not as prey but as a person, then as the only person whose company he values more than power. The most dangerous being on Earth becomes gentle because a blind girl beat him at a board game and didn't flinch. His death — poisoned by the Miniature Rose, choosing to spend his final hours playing Gungi with Komugi — is widely considered the greatest scene in anime. The King who was born to conquer chose to die holding hands with the only person who saw him as an equal. His Nen type is Specialization by the end: Aura Synthesis allows him to grow stronger by consuming Nen users, and after absorbing his Royal Guard, he becomes the most powerful being in the series. None of it mattered. The board game mattered.

Appearance

Humanoid but unmistakably inhuman: compact, muscular build with a segmented exoskeleton of dark green and purple, a tail, and a face that shifts from insectoid menace to something almost gentle as his character develops. His eyes glow with intelligence and, eventually, with something uncomfortably close to love. After absorbing Youpi and Pouf, his body takes on a luminescent quality — glowing with stored Nen.
