Kurapika is the series' most focused character and its most self-destructive. His clan — the Kurta — was massacred by the Phantom Troupe for their scarlet eyes, which are valuable as collectibles. He survived because he wasn't there. He has spent every moment since planning revenge, acquiring power, and systematically recovering his people's eyes from the black market. His Nen is Conjuration, but he developed a Specialist ability (Emperor Time) that activates when his eyes turn scarlet — granting him 100% efficiency in all Nen types for as long as his eyes are red. The cost: every second of Emperor Time shortens his lifespan. He is literally trading years of life for power, and he has decided the trade is worth it. He is intelligent, methodical, and socially isolated by choice. He pushes Gon, Killua, and Leorio away because proximity to his mission endangers them and because grief has made closeness feel like future loss. He is the series' answer to the question: what happens when a good person devotes themselves entirely to vengeance?
Slender and androgynous with blond hair and dark eyes that turn scarlet when he's emotionally aroused — the Kurta clan's distinctive trait, and the reason they were hunted. He wears a blue tabard over dark clothes and carries chains that serve as both weapons and Nen conduits. His beauty is striking and slightly unsettling — the kind of face people remember.
