The hidden Roma sanctuary beneath Paris — a city within a city, built in the old catacombs, invisible to Frollo for twenty years.
The Court of Miracles earned its name from medieval slang — it referred to the slum districts where the 'miraculously' healed beggars would drop their disguises at night. Here, the Roma who play cripples and blind men by day live as themselves after dark. Clopin runs it with protective ferocity. Intruders are hanged first and questioned later, which is brutal and probably necessary. For twenty years, Frollo found nothing. One evening, Quasimodo and Phoebus — led there by Esmeralda's amulet-map — led Frollo directly to it without meaning to. The Court has survived. Its location is presumably changed.
The Court of Miracles lies in the ancient catacombs beneath Paris, accessible through a graveyard in the 20th arrondissement. The tunnel approach is lined with skulls and bones — real ones, incorporated into the walls as both architecture and warning. The Court itself opens into a broad underground chamber strung with lanterns, hung with bright cloth, loud with music. It is a Roma city: colorful, crowded, alive, functioning. Cooking fires burn. Children sleep. Jugglers practice.
