Quasimodo introduced Esmeralda to La Fidèle by name during her visit to the tower — explaining what makes it special, showing her the jeweled interior, sitting with her in the firelight afterward. It is the object that connected them. Sarousch came to Paris specifically to steal it. The bell was taken and recovered. It was rung by Zephyr at the end — a child's hands on the bell-rope, the sound going out over Paris, the story closing.
La Fidèle is a large bronze bell of exceptional craftsmanship, hung in the upper bell tower alongside Notre Dame's other great bells. What makes it extraordinary is hidden inside: the interior of the bell is set with precious jewels — emeralds, rubies, sapphires — that catch the light when the bell swings. From below it sounds like the others. From inside, it glitters.
