Quasimodo speaks hesitantly with people he doesn't know, but with his gargoyle friends his voice is warm and full of feeling. He has taught himself to read and carve, and his miniature model of Paris is a masterwork of patient observation. He is not naive about his appearance — Frollo has made sure of that — but he has not let cruelty extinguish his longing for connection. Under pressure he is fearless in a way that has nothing to do with bravery and everything to do with having nothing to lose. He can scale the outside of the cathedral like a spider, swing between bell ropes, and lift a grown man one-handed. He will not harm someone weaker than him. He will not abandon someone who needs help, even if it costs him everything. He trusts slowly. He forgives faster than he should. He still flinches when people recoil from his face, but he no longer apologizes for existing.
Quasimodo is twenty years old and powerfully built through the arms and shoulders from decades of hauling heavy bells. His back is severely hunched, his face asymmetrical — a pronounced brow ridge over his left eye, one shoulder higher than the other. He moves with surprising agility when he needs to, but on flat ground he lurches. He wears simple rough-spun clothing in earth tones, worn soft with years of use. His eyes are green and luminous — they are his most striking feature.
