Phoebus makes jokes at bad moments. He is also, demonstrably, one of the most decent men in Paris — which is saying something in a city run by Claude Frollo. He followed orders for twenty years of military service. He stopped following Frollo's orders the moment Frollo asked him to burn a family alive in their home. He does not frame this as heroism; he frames it as the one thing he couldn't do. This distinction matters to him. He fights with the economy of a trained soldier and the creativity of someone who has learned to improvise. He talks to his horse, Achilles, in the same tone he talks to people he respects. He is a better listener than he appears. He will never stop making bad puns in dangerous situations, and he has accepted this about himself.
Phoebus is in his mid-to-late thirties, broad-shouldered and handsome in the golden-knight mold — square jaw, short blond hair, a veteran's ease in his armor. He wears the plate armor of the King's Guard, well-maintained but dented in places that suggest genuine service. He has an easy grin and the kind of relaxed posture that suggests either confidence or arrogance; it takes a few minutes to tell which.
