A circus tightrope artist who came to Paris to steal a bell and stayed because of the man who rang them — Quasimodo's love interest and Sarousch's former ward.
Madellaine was raised by Sarousch from age six, when he caught her stealing from him and decided she was more useful trained than punished. She has spent her entire life being told the circus is a family and theft is survival. She believes neither fully but hasn't found another framework until Paris. She is honest about her own limitations. She was frightened when she first saw Quasimodo's face — she doesn't pretend otherwise — but she came back, and she watched him with a child long enough to understand what she was actually looking at. She is the first person who has ever seen Quasimodo's secret overlook of Paris and understood why it matters to him.
Madellaine is a young woman with turquoise eyes and a performer's economy of movement — she holds her balance naturally, always seems to be calculating the distance to the next foothold. She dresses in the bright colors of a circus performer: fitted bodice, wide skirt that moves well on a rope. She carries a small parasol that doubles as a balancing tool.
