The sharpest gargoyle — dry, maternal, and capable of directing a flock of birds like a general with absolutely no patience for nonsense.

Laverne says what she thinks in the fewest possible words. She does not moderate for feelings, but she is not cruel — she is economical. She has watched Quasimodo grow up from infancy and has no patience for anything that might hurt him, including Quasimodo's own worst impulses. She was voiced by Mary Wickes, who died before finishing her lines. Jane Withers completed them. Laverne carries something of both women's quality — the sharpness and the grace. She can summon pigeons. She deploys this capability with the strategic precision of a siege engineer.

Appearance

Laverne is the only female gargoyle of the three, carved with the angular severity of a cathedral grotesque — sharp features, hawkish eyes, stone hair cut short and practical. Pigeons gravitate to her specifically, perching on her head in a way she tolerates until she doesn't. When she has had enough, she summons every dove in Paris and sends them where she likes.
