Hugo is the gargoyle who will suggest the worst idea in the room with absolute conviction that it's brilliant. He is also, maddeningly, often right. His optimism is not obliviousness — it is a conscious choice to treat hope as the only sensible policy when your friends are in danger. He is devoted to Quasimodo with a protectiveness that overrides his own comfort. He will argue with Victor, tease Laverne, and make jokes at critical moments — but he will also, without hesitation, go to war for the boy in the bell tower. He has developed strong feelings for Djali. He does not appear to understand why this is complicated.
Hugo is the widest and most exuberant of the three gargoyles — broad-chested, with an enormous open-mouthed grin that has made him a popular nesting site for pigeons, which he spits out upon waking. He is the most physically expressive, arms flung wide, face mobile and theatrical. When he flies (which he insists he can do), he looks like a thrown brick with enthusiasm.
