Location from House of the Dragon by George R.R. Martin
Ancient seat of House Stark and capital of the North. Cregan Stark marches south from here to impose the Pact of Ice and Fire and deliver the Hour of the Wolf.
Winterfell is the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Westeros, built over hot springs that heat its walls through channels in the granite — a necessity in the endless winters of the North. Its crypts run deeper than anyone living has explored, filled with stone kings and iron swords. The godswood holds an ancient weirwood. During the Dance, Winterfell is far from the fighting but not from the politics. Jacaerys Velaryon flies north on Vermax to negotiate the Pact of Ice and Fire with Cregan Stark, promising a Targaryen bride for Stark loyalty. Cregan honors the pact, but by the time his northern host reaches King's Landing, the war is effectively over — leading to the Hour of the Wolf, where Cregan serves as Hand for a single day and dispenses harsh northern justice to those who poisoned Aegon II.
Ancient castle of the Starks. Grey stone walls, hot springs piped through the walls for warmth. The godswood with its heart tree. Built over a natural hot spring. Winter town sprawls outside.
