The body of water separating Westeros from Essos. Key naval theater during the Dance, where the Velaryon fleet clashes with the Triarchy and controls supply lines.
The Narrow Sea is the channel between Westeros and Essos, narrow enough that on clear days the coast of one continent is sometimes visible from the other. It is the most heavily trafficked waterway in the known world — trade galleys, fishing boats, war dromons, and pirate vessels all compete for its waters. During the Dance, control of the Narrow Sea is strategically vital. The Velaryon fleet dominates early, blockading King's Landing and strangling Green trade. The Triarchy — the alliance of Lys, Myr, and Tyrosh — enters the war against the Blacks, and the resulting Battle of the Gullet is one of the largest naval engagements in Westerosi history. Dragonstone and Driftmark sit in its western reaches, making it Black territory for much of the conflict.
