Red Keep

Location from House of the Dragon by George R.R. Martin

The royal castle within King's Landing, built by Maegor the Cruel atop Aegon's High Hill. Contains the Iron Throne, Maegor's Holdfast, and the secret tunnels that make treachery so convenient.

The Red Keep earns its name from the pale red stone of its walls, visible from anywhere in the city. Built by Maegor the Cruel — who murdered every builder to keep its secrets — the castle is a labyrinth of halls, chambers, and hidden passages. Maegor's Holdfast, the fortified inner keep, can be sealed off entirely by raising its drawbridge over a dry moat lined with iron spikes. The Great Hall houses the Iron Throne. During the Dance, the Red Keep is where the Green council crowns Aegon II, where Helaena's son is murdered by Blood and Cheese, and where Rhaenyra briefly and disastrously rules before being driven out by riots. The castle's secret passages — known to Daemon, Mysaria, and Larys Strong — make it a place where no one behind locked doors is truly safe.
