Iron Throne Room

Location from House of the Dragon by George R.R. Martin

The Great Hall of the Red Keep where the Iron Throne sits — a towering mass of swords melted together by dragonfire. Where kings are crowned and unmade.

The Great Hall of the Red Keep is a cavernous space dominated by the Iron Throne — a massive, asymmetric monstrosity forged by Aegon the Conqueror from the swords of his conquered enemies, melted and twisted together by Balerion's fire. The throne is deliberately uncomfortable and dangerous; its blades have cut many a king who sits carelessly. Petitioners approach across a vast stone floor under the gaze of whoever holds the seat. During the Dance, this room witnesses Aegon II's hurried coronation by the Greens, Rhaenyra's triumphant but brief claim of the throne, and the political maneuvering that defines the war. The throne itself seems to pass judgment — Maegor died upon it, and the belief persists that the Iron Throne rejects the unworthy.
