The Gullet

Location from House of the Dragon by George R.R. Martin

The strait near Dragonstone where the Triarchy fleet clashed with the Velaryons. Jacaerys Velaryon died here when Vermax was brought down over the water.

The Gullet is the narrow strait between Dragonstone and Driftmark, a natural chokepoint in Blackwater Bay. The Battle of the Gullet is one of the largest naval engagements in Westerosi history — the Triarchy fleet, allied with the Greens, attacks through the strait to break the Black naval blockade. Dragons fight above while warships clash below. Jacaerys Velaryon, Rhaenyra's eldest son and heir, dies when his dragon Vermax is brought down into the sea — struck by crossbow bolts or tangled in ship rigging, accounts differ. The Blacks win the naval battle but lose their heir, and the Velaryon fleet is so badly mauled that it never fully recovers. It is a victory that tastes of ash.
