Casterly Rock

Location from House of the Dragon by George R.R. Martin

Seat of House Lannister, carved into a colossal rock on the western coast. Green-aligned during the Dance, providing gold and political support to Aegon II's cause.

Casterly Rock is not so much a castle as a mountain hollowed out into one — a great stone promontory jutting into the Sunset Sea, riddled with tunnels, mines, galleries, and halls carved over thousands of years. The Lannisters took it from the Casterlys through cunning rather than force, and their gold mines have made them the richest house in the realm. During the Dance, Jason Lannister sides with the Greens, and his twin brother Tyland serves as Aegon II's Master of Coin. The Lannister host marches east but is ambushed and broken in the Riverlands. The Rock itself is never threatened — its defenses are considered impregnable — but the Lannister contribution to the Green cause is more financial than military.

Appearance

Massive natural rock formation hollowed into a castle-fortress. The Lannisters have held it for thousands of years. Gold mines beneath — the source of Lannister wealth. Impregnable from the sea.
