Wildfire

Item from House of the Dragon by George R.R. Martin

A volatile alchemical substance that burns green, clings to surfaces, and ignites on contact with water. Created by the Alchemists' Guild in King's Landing.

Wildfire is a bright green liquid produced by the Alchemists' Guild through closely guarded processes. It burns with an eerie green flame, clings to whatever it touches, cannot be extinguished by water — which actually feeds the flames — and can only be smothered by sand. It is wildly unstable; old caches have been known to explode spontaneously. The substance is used in warfare as a siege weapon and naval incendiary, though its unpredictability makes it as dangerous to its users as to their enemies. During the Targaryen era, the Alchemists' Guild maintains stores beneath King's Landing. Wildfire represents the terrifying creativity of men who lack dragons but want to burn things anyway.
