Dragon Eggs

Item from House of the Dragon by George R.R. Martin

Petrified or dormant eggs of dragons, each worth a kingdom's ransom. Some hatch under the right conditions; most remain beautiful, enigmatic stones.

Dragon eggs are roughly the size of a child's head, covered in metallic scales that shimmer with color — golds, greens, blacks, crimsons, and colors that have no name. When dormant or petrified, they are hard as stone and warm to the touch. Under the right conditions — fire, blood, proximity to volcanic heat, or some lost Valyrian magic — they can hatch. During the Dance era, dragon eggs are placed in the cradles of Targaryen children, and the hatching rate is high enough that most royals bond with a dragon. Eggs that fail to hatch become priceless treasures, traded and hoarded. The Targaryens guard their eggs jealously, knowing that each one represents a potential weapon of mass destruction or a dynasty-securing bond.
