Vhagar

Character from House of the Dragon by George R.R. Martin

The largest living dragon in the world, nearly the size of Balerion the Black Dread — over 180 years old, she is ancient, terrible, and the single greatest military asset in the Dance, a living weapon whose sheer mass makes her nearly invincible in the sky.

Vhagar is not merely a dragon — she is a relic of the Conquest itself, the last survivor of the three dragons that forged the Seven Kingdoms. She was ridden by Queen Visenya Targaryen, then by Prince Baelon the Brave, then by Laena Velaryon, and finally by Prince Aemond. Each rider shaped her, and two centuries of war and loss have made her something vast and terrible and slow to rouse but catastrophic when roused. She is sluggish compared to younger dragons — she cannot match Caraxes for speed or Meleys for agility — but her fire burns hotter and wider than any living dragon's, and her sheer mass makes her nearly impossible to bring down. At Rook's Rest, she and Sunfyre fought Meleys together, and it was Vhagar's bulk that decided it. At the Gods Eye, she fought Caraxes in the most legendary dragon battle in history — and lost, dragged into the lake with Caraxes's jaws locked around her neck. Both dragons died, along with both riders. She was old and tired and ready, and it took the most vicious dragon alive to bring her down.

Appearance

Enormous beyond comprehension — her jaws are large enough to swallow a horse whole, and her shadow can darken entire fields. Her scales are a dark bronze-green, weathered and scarred by nearly two centuries of life. Her wings are vast, tattered at the edges but still thunderous. Her eyes are dim with age but burn with ancient fury when roused. She moves with the deliberate heaviness of something that knows nothing alive can threaten it. Every beat of her wings shakes the air like a storm.
