Character from House of the Dragon by George R.R. Martin
Jacaerys Velaryon's dragon, a young and capable beast who fought in the Battle of the Gullet and died there — crashing into the sea amid burning ships, taking his rider's hopes for the Black succession with him.
Vermax was Jacaerys's dragon and, by extension, the dragon of the Black heir presumptive. He was young but not untested — Jace flew him to the Eyrie and Winterfell to secure alliances, proving both dragon and rider capable of long-distance flight and diplomatic missions. He was growing into a formidable beast. At the Battle of the Gullet, where the Triarchy's fleet attacked the Velaryon navy, Vermax and Jace flew into combat against ships and scorpions. The details of their death are disputed — some say Vermax was struck by a scorpion bolt and crashed into the sea, others that he flew too low and became entangled in the rigging of a burning ship. Either way, both dragon and rider died in the water, and with them died Rhaenyra's eldest son and the most promising young dragonrider of his generation.
A young dragon of moderate size, with dark green-brown scales and a powerful build for his age. He is larger and more developed than Arrax, having had more time to grow, and carries himself with the confidence of a dragon whose rider has actually trained for war. His wings are broad enough for sustained flight over water.
