Ulf White

Character from House of the Dragon by George R.R. Martin

A dragonseed who claimed the gentle dragon Silverwing — a drunkard and a braggart who betrayed the Blacks at Tumbleton alongside Hugh Hammer, proving that some men will burn a city for a barrel of wine and the promise of a lordship.

Ulf White — also called Ulf the White, though the name likely comes from his pale hair rather than any noble quality — is Hugh Hammer without the ambition. Where Hugh dreamed of crowns, Ulf dreamed of wine, women, and a lordship with a comfortable castle. He claimed Silverwing, the gentlest and wisest of the old dragons, and the mismatch between rider and mount was obvious to everyone. He betrayed the Blacks at Tumbleton because Hugh did, and because the Greens offered him what the Blacks hadn't: respect, or at least its simulation. After the battle, he settled into an occupation of Tumbleton characterized by drunkenness, cruelty, and the casual exercise of power by a man who had never been taught to wield it responsibly. He was eventually poisoned — a quiet end for a loud man. Silverwing, freed from her unworthy rider, flew away and never accepted another.

Appearance

Slovenly, red-faced, and perpetually reeking of wine. He has enough Valyrian blood to show in his hair — a dirty, straw-colored approximation of silver-gold — but everything else about him screams lowborn excess. He is thick-bodied, loud, and carries himself with the belligerent confidence of a man who knows his dragon is the only thing keeping people from throwing him in a ditch.
