Meleys

Character from House of the Dragon by George R.R. Martin

The Red Queen — Princess Rhaenys's dragon, scarlet with copper highlights, the fastest dragon alive and a veteran of decades of flight, killed at Rook's Rest when she fought Vhagar and Sunfyre alone in the war's first great dragon battle.

Meleys was once the fastest dragon in the world, and even in her later years she retained that terrifying quickness. She was ridden by Princess Rhaenys — the Queen Who Never Was — and the pairing was formidable: an experienced rider on a battle-tested dragon, both of them with something to prove and nothing left to lose. At the Battle of Rook's Rest, Rhaenys and Meleys flew into what they may have known was a trap. Aegon II on Sunfyre and Aemond on Vhagar were waiting. Meleys fought brilliantly — she savaged Sunfyre, wounding both dragon and king badly — but two against one was arithmetic she could not overcome. Vhagar's bulk decided the battle. Meleys fell burning, with Rhaenys on her back. Her skull was later displayed in King's Landing as a trophy, copper and scarlet even in death.

Appearance

Scarlet scales with copper-colored highlights that catch the light like burnished metal. She is smaller than Vhagar but larger than most other dragons, lean and long-winged, built for speed rather than brute force. Her eyes are a fierce copper-gold. Despite her age, she moves with fluid grace — every motion efficient, no wasted energy. She is beautiful in the way a bird of prey is beautiful: designed entirely for killing.
