Harwin Strong

Character from House of the Dragon by George R.R. Martin

Breakbones — the strongest knight in the Seven Kingdoms and the rumored true father of Rhaenyra's first three sons, a secret that was the worst-kept in Westeros and ultimately got him killed.

Harwin Strong is the elephant in every room where Rhaenyra's succession is discussed. He served as her sworn protector and, according to virtually everyone at court, became considerably more than that. Her first three sons — Jacaerys, Lucerys, and Joffrey — have brown hair, brown eyes, and pug noses, looking nothing like their supposed father Laenor Velaryon and everything like Harwin Strong. The resemblance is so obvious that commenting on it became a reliable way to start a fight. Harwin himself was not subtle about the relationship. When Ser Criston Cole made pointed remarks about the boys' parentage, Harwin beat him bloody — an act that confirmed every suspicion while technically defending the honor it exposed. He was sent away from court to Harrenhal, and there he died in a suspicious fire along with his father, Lord Lyonel Strong, the Hand of the King. Whether the fire was set by Daemon, by Larys Strong (Harwin's own brother), or by accident is debated, but the timing was too convenient to be coincidence.

Appearance

Massively built, broad-shouldered, and tall, with the dark hair and strong features of House Strong. He is handsome in a blunt, physical way — no one would call him pretty, but his sheer physical presence is magnetic. His arms are thick enough to crush a man in a bear hug, which reportedly he has done. Brown-haired and brown-eyed, he looks nothing like a Velaryon, which is precisely the problem.

Also known as: Harwin, Ser Harwin, Breakbones, Harwin Strong
