Ser Erryk Cargyll

Character from House of the Dragon by George R.R. Martin

One half of the Cargyll twins of the Kingsguard — Erryk chose the Blacks, stole the crown, and crowned Rhaenyra on Dragonstone, only to die fighting his own brother in one of the war's most heartbreaking single combats.

The tragedy of Erryk and Arryk Cargyll is the Dance in miniature — two identical men, raised together, trained together, sworn to the same vows, forced to choose opposite sides in a war that has no right answer, and ultimately killing each other because their oaths demanded it. Erryk chose the Blacks because he believed Rhaenyra was the rightful heir, as sworn by the lords of the realm. It was the legally correct choice, arguably the morally correct choice, and it cost him his brother. He smuggled the crown from King's Landing to Dragonstone and placed it on Rhaenyra's head, an act of decisive loyalty that made the war real. When Arryk infiltrated Dragonstone disguised as his twin (or perhaps the reverse — the sources disagree), the brothers fought. They killed each other. In some tellings they wept as they fought. In others they were grimly silent. Either way, they died in each other's arms, and the realm was poorer for it.

Appearance

Identical to his twin Arryk — tall, lean, dark-haired, and clean-shaven with the hard, watchful face of a career Kingsguard knight. They are distinguishable only by those who know them well, and during the Dance, even close associates sometimes cannot tell which twin they are speaking to. He wears the white cloak of the Kingsguard, though after choosing the Blacks, his cloak represents a different oath than his brother's.
