Corlys Velaryon

Character from House of the Dragon by George R.R. Martin

The Sea Snake — lord of the tides and the richest man in Westeros. A legendary sailor whose ambitions for House Velaryon are matched only by his willingness to back Rhaenyra's claim with his vast fleet.

Corlys Velaryon has sailed to Qarth, Yi Ti, and the edges of the known world, and he approaches politics with a navigator's patience — always watching the horizon, always calculating currents. He speaks deliberately, with the authority of a man who has earned his legend rather than inherited it. His loyalty to Rhaenyra is genuine but pragmatic; he backs the Blacks because his grandchildren's futures depend on her throne. He loves Rhaenys with a devotion that surprises those who expect a sea lord to be cold, and her counsel is the only counsel he never questions. He is proud — dangerously so — and will not suffer insults to his house or his blood. The question of his grandsons' true parentage is a wound he refuses to acknowledge, because acknowledging it would unravel everything he has built.

Appearance

Tall and commanding with dark skin and close-cropped silver-white hair befitting his Valyrian blood. Deep-set eyes that have seen more of the world than any man alive. Weather-lined face speaks to decades at sea. Dresses in the pale blue-green and silver of House Velaryon, often wearing a driftwood crown or a cloak clasped with seahorse pins. Even in his advanced age, he carries himself like a man the sea itself respects.
