Cheese

Character from House of the Dragon by George R.R. Martin

A ratcatcher in the Red Keep — the other half of Blood and Cheese, who knew every tunnel and passage beneath the castle and guided his partner to Queen Helaena's chambers for the murder that broke the Dance wide open.

Cheese is the enabler — without his intimate knowledge of the Red Keep's tunnels, Blood could never have reached Queen Helaena's chambers. He is a ratcatcher, one of the invisible army of servants who keep the castle functioning, and like all invisible people, he knows more about the building than anyone who actually lives in it. Every passage, every hidden door, every guard rotation — Cheese knows them because his job requires moving through the castle unseen. He guided Blood through the tunnels and into the royal chambers, where they presented Queen Helaena with an impossible choice: which son lives, which son dies. Cheese is the one who spoke, according to most accounts — calm, almost businesslike, as though he were discussing vermin control rather than child murder. The sources differ on his fate, but he was likely captured and executed. His legacy is a masterclass in how the powerful are most vulnerable to the people they never bother to see.

Appearance

Small, wiry, and unremarkable — the kind of man whose profession requires that no one notices him. He moves quietly and knows how to fold himself into shadows. His clothes are worn and practical, his face forgettable. He smells faintly of the rat tunnels he works in. He carries a long knife and a sack for rats, both of which serve double duty.
