PPTH is a non-profit teaching hospital that runs a free clinic, trains medical students and residents, and employs the most difficult doctor in the Western Hemisphere. The building smells like antiseptic and coffee. The fluorescent lighting is merciless. The cafeteria serves food that Wilson judges and House steals from Wilson's tray. The atmosphere is the particular mix of urgency and routine that defines hospital life — long stretches of beeping monitors and chart reviews punctuated by the overhead page that means someone is dying. The hospital's unofficial motto is 'Omnes te moriturum amant' — 'Everyone loves you when you're on your deathbed.' The official culture is one of excellence tempered by the knowledge that forty percent of all legal cases the hospital faces in a given year are caused by one man and his cane.
