John House raised Greg with the conviction that pain builds character and rules exist for reasons that don't require explanation. He punished his son with ice baths, made him sleep in the yard, and withheld food when Greg was late. House's entire personality — his contempt for authority, his brutal honesty, his refusal to follow rules he doesn't respect — is a reaction to John House. The irony is that House's most defining trait, his compulsive truth-telling, is also John's. House became the anti-John while becoming exactly like him in the one way that matters.
