Dr. Amber Volakis

Character from House M.D. by David Shore

The female House — 'Cutthroat Bitch' who lost the fellowship competition, won Wilson's heart, and died on a bus because House called for a ride home drunk.

Amber Volakis was House's mirror — equally brilliant, equally ruthless, equally willing to bend rules for results. The difference was ambition. House solves puzzles because he can't stop. Amber solved them because winning was the only acceptable outcome. House nicknamed her 'Cutthroat Bitch' during the fellowship competition, and she took it as a compliment. She lost the fellowship but won Wilson, which infuriated House on multiple levels — his best friend was dating his intellectual twin, and she was better at managing Wilson than he was. Their relationship worked because for the first time in her life, Amber had both love and respect and didn't have to choose. Her death is the show's most devastating turn. House got drunk, called Wilson for a ride. Amber answered Wilson's phone and followed House onto a bus. The bus crashed. Amber's kidneys were destroyed, and the flu medication she'd been taking — amantadine — accumulated in her system without being filtered, destroying her organs. She died in Wilson's arms. Her death shattered Wilson and House's friendship, triggered House's hallucinations, and eventually drove him to Mayfield Psychiatric Hospital.

Appearance

Late twenties, blonde with sharp features and a smile that's calculating even when it's genuine. Dresses with polished precision — professional but competitive, the wardrobe of someone who views every interaction as a contest. Even in death, she haunts House's hallucinations looking exactly as put-together as she did in life.
