The Fungal Wastes are decomposition made into a biome. Everything here is either growing, rotting, or doing both simultaneously. The Mushroom Clan shares a hive mind through their spores. The Mantis Tribe occupies a fortified village at the region's heart, maintaining strict martial discipline while the world around them decays. The contrast between the mantis territory and the surrounding wastes is the region's defining tension: order versus entropy. The Mantis Lords guard the entrance to Deepnest, and their respect must be earned through combat before passage is granted. Leg Eater's shop is here, along with Cloth's first appearance and the Bretta rescue. The area functions as a crossroads between the City of Tears, Deepnest, and the rest of upper Hallownest.
Caverns dominated by enormous mushrooms of every size and color — some as large as buildings. Spore clouds drift through the air. The palette is muted purples, browns, and sickly greens. Acid pools bubble. Bouncing mushroom caps serve as platforms. The Mantis Village is an exception: clean, precise, orderly — a fortress of discipline in a landscape of rot.
