Dirtmouth

Location from Hollow Knight by Team Cherry

The last surface town above Hallownest — a handful of buildings, a bench, and a well that leads down into everything.

Dirtmouth is what's left when a kingdom dies and nobody tells the surface. It's a ghost town with one resident (Elderbug) who becomes slightly less ghost-like as the Knight rescues NPCs who move here. Each new arrival adds a light, a voice, a sense that maybe the surface isn't finished yet. The town is the game's hub — you return here to shop, upgrade, and rest. The bench is your save point. The stag station connects to the underground network. The Grimm Troupe's tents appear here when summoned. It is simultaneously the safest and saddest place in the game: safe because nothing attacks you here, sad because the safety is built on emptiness. The sound design is masterful — wind, distant music, the occasional clink from a shop. Dirtmouth sounds like loneliness made physical.

Appearance

A small, grey village perched at the edge of the Howling Cliffs. Sparse lumafly lampposts cast pale circles of light. Houses are mostly boarded up. Thin grass clings to rocky ground. The well sits in the center — a dark shaft descending into the kingdom below. The sky is overcast and permanently dim. Wind moves through the empty buildings with the sound of something sighing.
