City of Tears

Location from Hollow Knight by Team Cherry

The capital of Hallownest — a grand city of towers and fountains beneath an eternal rain, beautiful and empty and drowned in its own grief.

The City of Tears is the emotional and geographic center of Hallownest. It was the capital — the Pale King's grandest achievement, a city built for a civilization of sapient bugs. Now it is the most beautiful ruin in gaming. The rain never stops. The towers still stand. The windows still glow. Nobody lives here. The west side is common — plainer buildings, wider streets. The east side is wealthy — red and purple decor, smaller rooms, locked doors hiding luxury. The central Fountain Square has a memorial statue of the Hollow Knight. Quirrel sits at the window of a tower and stares at the rain, marveling. Lurien's Watcher Spire overlooks everything. The Soul Sanctum looms above. The Royal Waterways churn below. The city is a vertical cross-section of Hallownest's social structure: scholars above, royalty watching, sewers beneath, and rain falling on all of it equally.

Appearance

An enormous cavern containing a full city beneath Blue Lake, whose waters seep through the ceiling as perpetual rain. Tall towers with illuminated windows stretch upward. Grand architecture in blues and greys — wide plazas, ornate fountains, stone bridges arching between buildings. The rain gives everything a watercolor softness. The buildings are intact but abandoned. Lumaflies drift through the streets like lost thoughts.
