Soul is the life-force of every living thing in Hallownest. The Knight collects it by striking enemies with the nail and uses it to heal or cast spells. It is the game's mana system — elegant and lore-integrated. The Soul Sanctum scholars believed concentrated Soul could cure the Infection. They were wrong, and their pursuit of that theory killed everyone in the Sanctum. Soul Master became obsessed, then infected, then mad. The lesson: Soul sustains life but cannot overcome a goddess's vengeance. Soul collection creates a satisfying gameplay loop — you must fight to heal, which means engagement with enemies is always rewarded. The lore rationale (all bugs carry soul, combat releases it) means the mechanic is diegetic rather than abstract.
White-blue energy that rises from struck enemies like luminous mist. Collected in the Knight's Soul Vessel — a circular meter that fills with pale light. When focused into spells, it manifests as directed energy: a vengeful spirit (horizontal blast), a desolate dive (downward slam), or howling wraiths (upward scream).
