The King's Brand is the Pale King's authorization made physical. It opens the Abyss Door in the Ancient Basin — the only way to reach the birthplace of the Vessels and obtain the Void Heart. Hornet guards access to the Cast-Off Shell where it's found, making her final test of the Knight the gatekeeper for this critical item. The Brand represents a key thematic moment: the Knight must claim its father's authority to access the place where its father discarded it. The Pale King sealed the Abyss to hide his crime. The Knight unseals it by wearing the mark of the man who threw it away.
