The Infection

Item from Hollow Knight by Team Cherry

The orange plague consuming Hallownest — not a disease but a goddess's memory, forcing itself back into minds that chose to forget her.

The Infection is the Radiance's vengeance, her grief, and her self-assertion all at once. When the Moth Tribe abandoned her for the Pale King's consciousness, the Radiance's suppressed memory began forcing its way back through dreams. Bugs fell asleep and woke up wrong — mindless, aggressive, their eyes burning orange. The more bugs forgot the Radiance, the harder the Infection pushed. It is not a virus. It is a memory that won't die. Every infected husk is a vessel for the Radiance's light, forced back into a world that rejected it. The Pale King's solution — sealing the Radiance inside the Hollow Knight — worked for a time. Now the seal is cracking, and the Infection is spreading again. The Infection is the game's central metaphor: what happens when you try to erase something instead of confronting it. Suppression doesn't work. The light finds a way back.

Appearance

Vivid orange — pustules, growths, glowing eyes, pulsing veins of light that spread across surfaces and creatures. Infected bugs have orange eyes and erratic behavior. Infected areas throb with orange light. The visual signature is unmistakable: anything touched by the Infection looks like it's being burned from the inside by trapped sunlight.
