Grimmchild

Item from Hollow Knight by Team Cherry

A living charm born from the Grimm Troupe's ritual — a small, bat-like creature that follows the Knight and grows stronger as it feeds on nightmare flames.

The Grimmchild is both a companion and a plot device. Grimm gives it to the Knight as part of the Troupe's ritual: the Knight must collect nightmare flames from fallen warriors, which the Grimmchild consumes, growing stronger with each feeding. When fully grown, the Nightmare King is reborn through the old Grimm's sacrifice. Or — if the player follows Brumm's guidance and destroys the Nightmare Lantern — the ritual is broken, the Troupe is banished, and the Grimmchild is left behind as a harmless companion charm called Carefree Melody. The Grimmchild is the game's most explicit pet companion, and its growth from tiny helpless thing to active combatant mirrors the Knight's own progression. It is also a ticking clock: each feeding brings the inevitable ritual closer.

Appearance

A tiny, dark-red creature with bat-like wings and a round head. It floats beside the Knight when equipped as a charm. As it feeds on collected nightmare flames, it grows larger and more aggressive — firing projectiles at enemies. In its final stage, it resembles a miniature Grimm. Its eyes are bright and watchful.
