The public elementary school where Arnold and his friends spend their days — a slightly worn institution presided over by the perpetually harassed Principal Wartz and the earnest Mr. Simmons.
P.S. 118 is where most of the structured social drama of the neighborhood plays out — the classroom is a pressure cooker that concentrates all the dynamics of the street into a single room under fluorescent lights. Mr. Simmons teaches the main class with an aggressively positive approach that is both genuine and slightly exhausting. Principal Wartz lurks with his particular brand of bureaucratic anxiety. The school is also a social proving ground. Lunchtime, the playground, the hallways between classes — these are where status is established and challenged, where rumors travel at speed, and where the small dramas of childhood feel very large indeed.
A solid, red-brick urban public school building of the kind built in the mid-twentieth century, with wide double doors, tall narrow windows, and institutional tile floors inside. The hallways smell of chalk, floor wax, and packed lunches. The playground behind it has asphalt and a chain-link fence.
