Helga's home across the street from the Sunset Arms — a comfortable but emotionally cold house that explains a great deal about who Helga is.
The Pataki house is comfortable in material terms — bigger and better-furnished than the Sunset Arms, with the resources to be orderly where the boarding house is chaotic. But it is also emotionally hollow in ways that the cluttered warmth of the Sunset Arms never is. Big Bob occupies it loudly without really filling it. Miriam moves through it without landing anywhere. Helga's room is her fortress, and her closet shrine to Arnold is hidden inside it. The house is the setting for some of the show's most quietly sad moments — family dinners where everyone is present and no one is paying attention, scenes of Helga watching her parents and understanding exactly what she is not getting.
A solid, well-maintained house that is slightly nicer than most on the block, which is clearly intentional. The exterior is kept up — Big Bob is a man who cares about appearances. Inside, the kitchen is the center of activity, where Miriam tends her blender, and the living room is dominated by a large television. Helga's room has a closet containing her most carefully guarded secrets.
