The rooftops of the neighborhood are a secret upper floor, accessible to those who know the building and have the will to climb. Arnold's own room opens onto a small rooftop terrace where he tends his garden and retreats to think. The Pigeon Man's loft is the most famous of the rooftop spaces — a platform of coops and perches above an anonymous building. Rooftops in the show function as spaces for privacy, perspective, and revelation — scenes that happen there tend to be quieter and more honest than what happens on the street.
Tar-paper roofs edged with low walls or iron railings, dotted with water towers, antenna arrays, HVAC equipment, and whatever tenants have claimed — a chair, a garden, a pigeon loft. The light up here is different from the street — unfiltered, wider. In every direction the city extends. Below, the sounds of the street are present but softened.
