The shrine is the most extreme expression of Helga's inner life — proof that her love for Arnold is not a passing crush but something she has actively built and tended over years. It contains a gum sculpture of his face that she has clearly spent significant effort on. It is the most private thing she owns, in a life that keeps everything private. The shrine functions as comedy and pathos simultaneously — you laugh at the extremity of it and feel the loneliness behind it in the same moment. It is the image the show uses to remind you that Helga, despite everything, is the most feeling person in the room.
A closet space transformed into something between a memorial and a fantasy: photographs of Arnold arranged carefully, a bust sculpted from chewing gum in Arnold's likeness, candles, clippings, drawings, and the general evidence of years of devoted and clandestine construction.
