Gerald's personal stickball bat — a worn, taped-handled stick that is his instrument of authority at Gerald Field and a symbol of neighborhood kid culture.
The stickball bat is less notable as an object than as what it represents — Gerald's claim to Gerald Field, to the cool authority of the kid who calls the game and sets the rules. It is brought out for games, carried to the lot, and put away with a proprietary care that suggests it means something. In a neighborhood where most things are shared or communal, the bat is one of the few clearly personal objects in the friend group's daily life. It is Gerald's in the way that the legends are Gerald's — by right of custody and personality.
A broom handle or thick dowel, worn smooth by years of handling, with friction tape wound around the grip end in a way that has been redone so many times it has its own layers of history. The striking end is slightly scuffed. It is the right length for Gerald and slightly too long for almost everyone else.
