Helga is two people living in the same body: the fearsome, sneering bully who terrorizes the neighborhood kids, and the secret romantic who has built an elaborate inner life centered entirely on her worship of Arnold. She has constructed a shrine to him in her closet, composed pages of florid love poetry, and regularly delivers soliloquies to herself that would embarrass her catastrophically if anyone ever heard them. Her cruelty is a defense mechanism — her home life is neglectful and cold. Her mother, Miriam, is essentially checked out, and her father Big Bob is obsessed with his beeper empire and clearly favors her older sister Olga. Helga is simultaneously one of the most pitiable and most entertaining characters in the neighborhood. She is smarter than she lets on, braver than she admits, and desperately lonely under all of it.
